Intestinal Cancer

Intestinal cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is a type of cancer that begins in the large intestine (colon) or the rectum. It occurs when healthy cells in the intestine develop changes in their DNA which cause them to grow and divide uncontrollably, forming a mass called a tumor. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, fatigue, and changes in bowel habits. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Early detection is key to successful treatment, so it's important to speak with your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.

Common Treatment Methods

Treatment for intestinal cancer may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy. Surgery is the most common treatment and may involve removing the tumor, part of the intestine, and/or other nearby organs. Radiation therapy may be used to shrink the tumor before or after surgery. Chemotherapy is used to kill cancer cells and is often combined with radiation therapy. Targeted therapies and immunotherapy are newer treatments that can help slow the growth of cancer cells.
